November 5, 2024: Presidential General Election
Vote by Mail Ballots returned on Election Day to VRE, dropped off at any Official Ballot Drop Box or Vote Center location, or postmarked by Election Day and returned within seven days are considered timely. These Vote by Mail Ballots are subject to the same verification steps as Vote by Mail Ballots returned prior to Election Day. All Vote by Mail ballots will be signature verified, opened, processed, tabulated, and included in Election Results.
Conditional Voter Registration (CVR) or Provisional Ballots issued at VRE or Vote Centers when the voters registration cannot be immediately verified. Each CVR or Provisional ballot is individually researched and processed to determine eligibility. Once eligibility is determined, the CVR or Provisional ballot is opened, processed, tabulated, and included in Election Results.
State law requires VRE to notify voters if they forget to sign their pink Vote by Mail return envelope or if the signature on their envelope does not match the signature VRE has on file for the voter. Challenged Ballots will remain challenged until the voter submits a Signature Verification Statement.
Depending on the volume of Vote by Mail, CVR, or Provisional ballots received, it may take up to a month* for VRE to verify, open, process, and tabulate these ballots.

If the only ballots left to count are Challenged Ballots, for which a voter has the opportunity either to verify or provide their signature pursuant to subdivision (d) or (e) of
Section 3019, VRE will stop posting election results updates pursuant to
EC§ 15306(a).
*Certification deadlines vary based on the type of election administered. The deadline for Presidential Elections is 28 days. The deadline for Gubernatorial Elections is 30 days.
